Car Choices:
Going to the top is the order of the day. The 1.6 with either 115hp (for 1996-1999 and GLS models) or 124hp (2000-2002 MX) is nothing special, but it provides enough grunt for all around usage.

The other engine choices available throughout the Lancer's life are a 73hp 1.3 carburetor (dropped in its 1999 update), and a 88hp 1.5 carburetor. The carburetors are better avoided unless you are knowledgeable on fixing them.

EL models get steel rims, air conditioning, power steering, a cassette tuner, and a 1.3 carburetor engine. GL gains alloy rims and a 1.5 carburetor while the GLXi has the 1.6 EFi, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, and CD player. A revised line-up in July 1999 relegated the GLX as the base model; this variant has alloy wheels, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, air conditioning, cassette with CD player, and the 1.5 carburetor engine. Next is the GLS which adds ABS brakes, airbags, fog lamps, and in-dash CD player. MX variants would have rear parking sensors, twin exhaust pipes, 2DIN radio, keyless entry, and alarm as add-ons.
