Used Car Review - Ford Lynx RS (2003-2005)

Myk Belmonte invites you to start the month of August with something fast and not to forget, affordable.

2003-2005 Ford Lynx RS

History
For those who don't know what does RS mean, this stands for Rallye Sport. And the RS badge was created for rally racing, which is incidentally the performance car and motorsport division of Ford in Europe. Among the vehicles blessed with the RS badge include the European Escort, Sierra, Fiesta, and Focus.

Although the Laser wasn't used for rallying, a special edition was made available in Taiwan and in some South East Asian countries as the Laser RS (or Lynx RS). While some countries phased this model out in favor of the Focus in 2003, some countries released this variant during that year.

In celebration of Ford's 100th anniversary, the Lynx RS was made available together with the Centennial Edition (virtually the same vehicle but can only be purchased in black, has silver stitching, and a free special edition key chain and coffee table book comes standard) in late 2003. This was the year when vehicle taxes are based on their value, not on their engine displacement or people carrying ability. Technically, this was the first compact to have a 2.0 engine which the Honda Civic followed suit in it 2004 update.

Value and Costs
Unlike the Civic SiR that was launched few years earlier, the Lynx RS/Centennial Edition has low residuals since it does not have a huge following in the country. You can get one for just P220,000-P380,000 but remember, stock units are in the lower range while those used in car shows (and presumably modified) have high prices. For your enjoyment, get a stock model since they are priced cheaply.

What problems would one encounter in this vehicle? Although there are not to large a problem, the suspension must be replaced especially if the owner drives in rough roads most of the time. Fuel economy, as some mentioned in popular automotive forums, is better than the Ghia variant. Although this must be due to the RS' standard manual transmission and high torque which beats the Ghia's heavy body and 1.6 engine combo in stop and go traffic.

Exterior and Interior
Oh, the coincidence here, it was nearly a year I reviewed the pedestrian model Lynx. So, the different bumpers give a touch of aggressiveness, a standard rear spoiler, and a mesh grille to distinguish it to its lower brethren are some highlights. Just remember that RS models are sold in red while Centennial edition ones are in black.

No leather seats come standard since fabric ones with red and silver stitching comes standard. To know if you're buying a genuine one, the front backrests and floor mats must have an RS label. The gauges are the highlight of the interior since you are informed if you are fast enough, but the green lighting at night isn't appealing to some. Other things to remember to see if the unit you are examining is an RS/Centennial Edition are the stitching in the gear stick, silver trim in the door handles and arm rests, and aftermarket type pedals. There are some distractions for the driver especially when opening the fog lights located near the left knee of the driver and the volume and on/off function placed in the rightmost portion. Occupants have ample room inside the cabin, so four can also hop in and enjoy the driving pleasure.

Engine
Exclusive in this trim model is the FSDE 1,991cc I4 with 143hp at 6,000rpm and 192Nm at 4,500rpm. The great thing about this engine is it can reach 6,000rpm redline with an accompanying noise thanks to the VICS mechanism. This can be a practical partner, especially when driven prudently, can reach a decent 9km/L in the city.

Driving Impressions
Definitely something fun to drive, with its solid and lightweight chassis which befits this vehicle. When on the road, ruts are tolerable but don't drive in the rough ones since the noise and vibration generated isn't music to the ears. Steering is an entertainment but braking is a mixed bag, with a spongy reaction when encountering deceleration from triple digit speeds. The shifter is somewhat clunky though, but nevertheless the key to driving excitement.

Verdict
Imagine a pocket rocket at prices where plain Jane sedans exist, what more can you ask for. Unlike the SiR whose resale prices are still high despite being as old as a high school student, the RS is a wonder that can be a practical city driver.

The Good:
  • Fast
  • Handles great
  • Cheap
The Bad:
  • Rare to find
  • Bulky clutch
  • Poor NVH insulation
The Pick: Go for a well maintained unit

Seat Toledo, 2013

  •  Seat Toledo, 2013
Elegant and harmonious
The designers added an element of refinement to the roofline: It describes an elegant curve as far as the broad C-column, which smoothly emerges from the rear side. The swept-back rear screen gives the new SEAT Toledo a harmonious, balanced stance - without reducing the car's versatility and functionality.

A precise contour leads from the outer edge of the headlights over the shoulder and to the rear lights, meeting the clean lines of the sills below. The rear doors provide another example of the well-conceived design: With their generous dimensions, they guarantee easy access and exit.

The new saloon car from the Spanish SEAT brand combines design and utility, dynamism and efficiency, quality and value-for-money as never before. With generous space, great flexibility and an excellent price-performance ratio, the new Toledo appeals to customers seeking a practical, high-quality and affordable saloon car for the whole family - and who are not prepared to do without superior design and dynamic driving pleasure.

With its unique features, the new SEAT Toledo continues the formula for success of its predecessors. SEAT produced over 860,000 units of the first two Toledo series alone - a success that was always based on the combination of attractive design and practical features. The all-new generation of the SEAT Toledo will continue this success when it is delivered to the first customers, starting in mid-November in Spain and Portugal, then in the rest of Europe in 2013.

Perfect utility, the latest technology
The new Toledo is a grown-up automobile: With a length of 4.48 metres, it has a large and wide hatchback tailgate. It opens up to reveal a luggage compartment offering 550 litres of space in the basic version, which can be expanded to an amazing 1,490 litres with the optional folding rear seats. So the SEAT Toledo has the same capacity as many estate cars. The comparatively long wheelbase of 2,602 millimetres (80 millimetres longer than of the Toledo II) makes for a spacious interior and good legroom for all passengers; the generously sized doors guarantee easy access and exit.

As a completely new model, the SEAT Toledo features the latest engines and transmissions from the Volkswagen Group. The top models feature highly efficient TSI petrol engines and common-rail TDI diesel engines, and the most powerful petrol engine is combined with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DSG). The petrol engines deliver between 55 kW (75 hp) and 90 kW (122 hp); the Ecomotive version stands out with CO2 emissions of 116 grams per kilometre. And with the TDI diesel engine, which delivers 77 kW (105 hp) from 1.6 litres, the E-Ecomotive version sets the benchmark with fuel consumption of 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 104 grams per kilometre. In 2013, SEAT will add to the range of Toledo diesel models with a TDI version delivering 66 kW (90 hp).

The design
The new SEAT Toledo fits harmoniously into the further developed SEAT design identity, as expressed by the widely acclaimed IBE, IBX and IBL concept cars and consistently applied in the new Leon. The Toledo presents a strong and solid stature with clear and precisely defined surfaces, lines and edges. The broad, angular headlights are a significant element of the brand's new design DNA. Together with the trapezoid-shaped, low radiator grill, the trapezoid lower air vents and the horizontal rear lights, they effectively emphasise the car's width.

Modern, purist interior
The interior of the new SEAT Toledo is bright and spacious, reflecting the modern and purist design philosophy of the exterior. The cockpit is tidy and ergonomically laid out. Especially with the optional beige interior, the dark upper surfaces of the cockpit seem to hover above the rectangular air vents and trim. The clearly designed round instruments are easy to read; the control elements for audio and air-conditioning in the central console can be operated intuitively.

The interior design is perfectly supplemented with high-quality workmanship and carefully selected materials and colours. The precision applied is tangible in many details: in the attractively shaped three-spoke steering wheel for example, in the new operation of the air conditioning, or in the elegant chrome trim. The tactile precision of the switches and controls also demonstrates the utmost attention to detail.

The technology
As a completely new model series, the SEAT Toledo offers the state-of-the-art technologies available for its category. That begins with the highly rigid body shell, which provides a feeling of solid quality and offers optimal passive safety in combination with the standard restraint systems. But thanks to SEAT's intelligent lightweight design concept, the basic weight of the new Toledo is just 1,140 kilograms.

The efficiency of the new SEAT Toledo is outstanding. In terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, all of the engine and performance versions of the Toledo range are among the best in their class. These exemplary values demonstrate the convincing overall package of low vehicle weight, optimal aerodynamics and ultramodern drivetrains.

Ultramodern engine programme
The engine programme of the new SEAT Toledo is based on three ultramodern four-cylinder TSI engines delivering between 63 kW (85 hp) and 90 kW (122 hp), as well as a turbo-diesel engine with at first 1.6 litres displacement and 77 kW (105 hp). The entry-level model has a three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine with multipoint fuel injection and maximum power output of 55 kW (75 hp).

With displacement of 1,197 cubic centimetres, the TSI engine demonstrates the logic of the downsizing philosophy, according to which smaller gasoline engines with direct fuel injection and turbocharging enjoy the advantage of high efficiency. The engine's low weight of 89.5 kilograms, its low internal friction and optimised thermo management for shorter warm-up times of engine and catalyst are additional benefits of the TSI engines.

The Toledo 1.2 TSI Ecomotive is especially efficient: This turbo engine with 77 kW (105 hp) returns standard fuel consumption of just 5.0 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 116 grams per kilometre thanks to its start-stop system, brake-energy recuperation and a gear-change indicator in the dashboard. And with its 55-litre fuel tank, the car can travel 1,000 kilometres or more without filling up, depending on driving styles.

Exemplary efficiency and dynamics
This exemplary efficiency has no negative impact on the sporty dynamics of the SEAT Toledo 1.2 TSI: With maximum torque of 175 newton metres between 1,550 and 4,100 rpm, the engine provides great pulling power. A top speed of 195 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds are respectable performance figures for this class. Of course, the Toledo 1.2 TSI with 90 kW (122 hp) and standard DSG dual-clutch transmission is even more dynamic: This model has a top speed of 206 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds.

TDI is other efficiency highlight
The 1.6 TDI Ecomotive is an additional efficiency highlight in the new SEAT Toledo range. This model shines with standard fuel consumption of just 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres and corresponding CO2 emissions of only 104 grams per kilometre. These excellent figures are also partially due to the car's standard start-stop system and braking-energy recuperation. Another impressive feature of the 1.6 TDI with common-rail fuel injection is its maximum torque of 250 newton metres between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm - making sufficient power available in every situation. In 2013, SEAT will also launch a model with another common-rail diesel engine delivering 66 kW (90 hp), also guaranteeing extremely favourable CO2 emissions.

The new Toledo's gearboxes are just as advanced as the engines. The TDI engines and the 1.2-litre 55 kW (75 hp) MPI and 1.2-litre 63 kW (85 hp) TSI are combined with perfectly matched five-speed manual transmission; while the model with the 77 kW (105 hp) petrol engine comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. The SEAT Toledo 1.4 TSI with a top speed of 206 km/h is exclusively supplied with the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. The DSG transmission combines the sportiness and efficiency of a manual gearbox with the convenience of a conventional automatic. The imperceptible interruption of tractive power with gear changes in just a few hundredths of a second is particularly impressive and enjoyable.

The suspension of the new SEAT Toledo features sophisticated design and careful tuning, giving the saloon car sporty and safe handling. Front suspension is by means of MacPherson struts, lower wishbones and stabilisers, while a compact torsion-beam axle is used at the rear. ESP, the electronic stabilisation programme, is fitted as standard equipment. The electrohydraulic power steering is sporty and direct, and provides less servo assistance as the car's speed increases. It ensures precise steering, responsiveness and excellent straight-line stability.

Equipment levels
SEAT offers the new Toledo in three equipment versions - so that the model can be perfectly tailored to individual customer wishes. Standard equipment for all three versions includes front and side airbags for driver and front passenger, head and thorax airbags, seatbelt reminders, ABS, ESP with ASR, central locking, folding rear seat and electric front windows. The 15-inch steel wheel rims are fitted with tyres sized 185/60 R 15.

The SEAT Toledo Reference also comes with height adjustment for the driver's seat, remote central locking, split-folding rear seat, trip computer and an illuminated glove compartment. With the 77 kW/105 hp and 90kW/122hp engines, the Reference version is fitted with tyres sized 195/55 R 15. Exterior mirrors and door handles are painted to match the car body. Among the options list for the Reference are electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, roof antenna and radio preparation including four loudspeakers.

SEAT Toledo Style meets the highest demands
The Style version is targeted at comfort-oriented customers, and emphasises its status as the top model with 16-inch light-alloy wheels and tyres sized 215/45 R 16. The package includes optional front fog lights with active static cornering lights up to a speed of 40 km/h. They are switched on automatically whenever the indicator is operated or when the steering wheel is moved substantially - a definite safety advantage when turning off at junctions or when entering a main road. When reverse gear is selected, both lights illuminate simultaneously.

The all-inclusive package of the SEAT Toledo Style also includes electric rear windows, a radio/CD player operated with switches on the steering wheel, height adjustment for the front passenger seat, leather steering wheel and gearstick lever, and central armrests front and rear. Cruise control is available as an option.

Option packages for easy customising
The SEAT Toledo can be further customised with a number of special option packages, making life in the car even more pleasant. The Winter package appeals to inhabitants of colder areas with heated front seats, a headlamp cleaning system and heated windshield washer nozzles. The Storage package includes practical tie-rings and boot-floor rails for more variable use of the luggage space and to install nets or partitions.

The many options that can also be ordered individually for the SEAT Toledo include air conditioning (for the Toledo Style) of the fully automatic Climatronic, a rear-screen wiper, interior monitoring, a removable tow bar, rear parking sensors, drive-off assistance for hills linked with ESP ("hill holder"). The SEAT Sound System 2.1 provides exceptionally good sound and excellent functionality.

The top multimedia system in the SEAT Toledo Style is the optional SEAT Media System 2.2, featuring 4 x 20 watts of amplification, six loudspeakers and a CD player with MP3 and WMA facilities. The communication centre is rounded off with a Bluetooth function, voice control, DAB/DAB+ reception (digital audio broadcasting) and DMB programmes (digital multimedia broadcasting), an AUX-in connection for using an external multimedia source, such as an MP3 player, and a 5-inch touchscreen monitor. The satellite navigation system with an SD card slot for storing current map material operates with dynamic routing, so it seeks the best route with consideration of any traffic jams. The high-definition display has a split function; in addition to the roadmap, other information can be viewed simultaneously.

SEAT offers the Toledo in three standard and seven metallic colours (two soft, seven metallic and one custom colour). With the Toledo Style, the interior can be ordered in a sophisticated beige, instead of the standard grey.

The heritage
The Toledo has been one of SEAT's most successful model series since the year 1991. That's when the first generation of this medium-sized saloon car debuted at the Barcelona Motor Show. After SEAT was integrated into the Volkswagen Group, the Toledo was the first model to apply the new technology of the Volkswagen Group. In 1992, SEAT was one of the main sponsors of the Barcelona Olympic Games - and the Toledo stand was again in the spotlight as the official car of the Games.

The first Toledo, designed by Italdesign Giugiaro in Turin, established the model series' now almost legendary reputation as a particularly spacious and cost-conscious automobile. Although it is by no means a very large car with a length of 4.32 metres, it was regarded as being unusually spacious. The enormous rear hatch of the notchback salon also proved to be extremely practical.

When the ten-millionth SEAT was driven off the assembly line by his Royal Highness Prince Felipe de Borbon in Martorell on 26 September 1995, this honour was allotted to a Toledo. In the same year, the first Toledo TDI with a turbo diesel engine and direct fuel injection appeared.

Toledo II as of 1998
At the Paris Motor Show in October 1998, SEAT unveiled the second generation of the Toledo. Once again, SEAT decided in favour of notchback styling for the Toledo, but this time with a conventional boot lid. With a volume of 500 litres, the second SEAT Toledo also offered enormous luggage space.

Once again, the design was greatly influenced by Giorgetto Giugiaro. However, it also displayed some of the brand's family features created by SEAT Design, with the SEAT logo mounted on a dark radiator grill and horizontal air vents on both sides. Overall, the Toledo II had more flowing lines and made a softer impression than its predecessor with its angular shape and horizontal elements.

Toledo III
When SEAT discontinued production of the Toledo II in 2004, more than 860,000 cars of the two generations had been built. Between 2004 and 2009, the Toledo III was produced, based on the SEAT Altea - with a high roofline and a rounded rear end. This 4.46-meter long model offering 500 to 1,400 litres of loading space continued the SEAT Toledo's good reputation as an extremely spacious vehicle.

With what is now the fourth edition of a model series that has been successful for more than two decades, SEAT is continuing the great tradition of the Toledo - with a model that combines the spaciousness of the first generation with the attractive design of the second: enhanced with highly efficient engines, lightweight construction, dynamic handling and the outstanding manufacturing quality of the current SEAT products.

Scion tC, 2014

  •  Scion tC, 2014

The Scion revealed new 2014 tC sports coupe at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, showing off a sporty new look, upgraded interior and an enhanced driving experience for the brand's top-selling vehicle.

Aggressive Look with New Exterior Design and 18-Inch Wheels
The 2014 Scion tC is defined by more assertive styling, starting from the front with distinctive new headlamps and an all-new hood that extends lower toward a more open, muscular grille with an embedded tC logo. The new upper- and lower-grille treatments are bordered by LED accent lighting.

Beneath the rear bumper, a new black-out valance features an FR-S style, lower-center trim piece and lower perimeter reflectors; new advanced LED tail lamps complete the picture. New 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/45R18 tires carry the aggressive character through to the car's profile. Standard on the Scion tC, the wheels feature a premium dark gray finish, contrasted by eye-catching machined-spoke surfaces.

Upgraded Materials and Scion Standard Display Audio Enhance Interior
The 2014 Scion tC's cabin adds new technology, additional convenience features and upgraded materials. The tC will be the first model in the family to come with the all-new Scion Standard Display Audio, featuring a 6.1-inch LCD touchscreen. The system will be incorporated into all 2014 Scion models, making Scion the industry's first non-luxury brand to feature a touchscreen audio system as standard equipment across its entire lineup. The new audio system comes equipped with features that Scion drivers will enjoy, including Bluetooth® compatibility, HD Radio™ Technology and steering wheel-mounted controls.

The new base audio system will be joined by an available, all-new Scion BeSpoke Premium Audio system featuring Aha™. This upgraded system includes full navigation, as well as the ability to connect compatible smart phones through Aha to access 30,000 free audio stations, including Scion's own signature station featuring a lineup of its 17 music channels. In addition to audiobook stations, sports, news and entertainment, the Aha service utilizes location-based services like Yelp and TripAdvisor, and integrates most of the popular social media applications, all at a great value for consumers.

Added convenience features for the 2014 tC include auto-off headlamps and an auto-up and down driver's window. The interior is upgraded with premium materials and lighter color fabric on the seats and the headliner.

The Scion tC will be available in seven exterior paint colors, including two new additions, Absolutely Red and Blue Streak Metallic.

Sportier Automatic Transmission and Enhanced Dynamic Handling
Getting there will be more than half the fun in the 2014 tC. Its 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine delivers 179 horsepower at 6,000 RPM, and it is available either with a six-speed manual transmission or an updated six-speed automatic that can change gears nearly twice as fast as the previous model for both upshifts and downshifts. The automatic transmission now features Dynamic Rev Management technology, adopted from the FR-S, which quickly blips the engine to match its revs to gear ratios on downshifts, limiting driveline shock and adding to the visceral experience of driving the car.

Handling is enhanced by making modifications to stabilizer bar hardware, optimizing the shock absorbers, and by increasing the body rigidity with additional spot welds. Driving enthusiasts will also appreciate the retuned electronic power steering that provides a more engaging response. Together, these changes help the new Scion tC to deliver a sportier, fun-to-drive experience behind the wheel. The 2014 Scion tC will arrive in dealerships in June 2013.

  •  Renault Scenic XMOD, 2013

Technology on the inside
Inside Renault Scénic XMOD, the driver enjoys a cockpit-like environment with an exclusive fixed centre console and an array of controls. The rotary control for the all-new Extended Grip traction control system and the multi-directional joystick control for the multimedia system are both easy to reach. Featuring a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) digital display, the dashboard is dominated by the fully connected Renault R-Link touchscreen multimedia system. The top-of-the-range version of XMOD includes a flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminium-capped pedals and gear lever knob and new interior appointments. Rounding out the offer is new stitched upholstery and Leather/Alcantara Pack.

Sporty and elegant, Renault Scénic XMOD winningly combines the outdoor cues of a crossover with the refined world of an MPV. With a raised ground clearance and special alloy wheels, the car features an expressive crossover-inspired design: special front and rear bumpers, sill guards and chrome-finish roof bars. The new front end is also more expressive, incorporating Renault's new design identity and signature LED daytime running lights.

Extended grip underneath
Renault Scénic XMOD is the first vehicle in the Renault range to feature the all-new Extended Grip system. This advanced traction control system enables the vehicle to grip the roadconfidently under difficult driving conditions (snow, mud, sand, etc.). Manually activating the rotary control positioned on the centre console, the driver can choose from three types of assistance.

In 'Expert' mode, Extended Grip manages the braking system, while leaving the driver in full control of the engine torque. The 'Road' mode offers conventional traction control settings. It automatically reconnects at speeds of over 40kph. The 'Loose Ground' mode optimises braking control and engine torque control as a function of available grip.

Plus all the DNA of Renault Scénic
Renault Scénic XMOD retains the key features which have made Scénic the benchmark in the compact MPV segment. Its boot capacity is up to 555 litres, one of the biggest in its class. No less than 71 litres of additional stowage space are cleverly spread around the cabin. Renault Scénic XMOD offers simple, effective and fast modularity: the seats are independent, folding and removable to provide a host of seating configurations for the occupants. Renault Scénic XMOD will be produced at the Douai plant in France.

Used Car Review - Lexus IS (2009-2013)

Before leaving July, Myk Belmonte pulls up the strings for our last car review for this month for its premiere.

2009-Current Lexus IS

History
Japanese mainstream brands have their luxury divisions with Toyota having Lexus, Honda owning Acura, and Nissan with their Infiniti. The advantage is that parts, engines, and platforms can be shared while at the same time targeting the upper class market. Downside is that some keen eyed enthusiasts would dismiss them as tarted up models and some image problem.

One product of the luxury division creation is the Lexus IS, whose first generation model started life in 1998 as either the Lexus IS or the Toyota Altezza. Jump in to the second generation which had its launch in the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005 and sales commenced in September of that year. Either available in sedan or convertible and in a slew of engines (from 4 to 8 cylinders and an option of gasoline or diesel) and transmissions (6 speed manual and 6 or 8 speed automatic), the IS did battle with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes Benz C Class. An F-Sport variant was made available in 2007 as a response to BMW's M performance division and Benz's AMG. By this time, a third generation model is already for sale with a wide range of engine choices.

Lexus Manila brought in the facelifted model as the part of their Philippine arrival back in 2009. The IS line-up accommodated the sedan and a convertible (this will have its own review soon) launched later that year. Just last May, Lexus pulled their strings for the third generation IS available in normal and F Sport flavors.

Value and Costs
Want something enjoyable to drive but hate the exorbitant maintenance prices of the Germans, then the Lexus IS is a godsend, with prices below P2M for good second hand units. All you need is a keen eye if buying from a private owner or a dealer, but I recommend checking out the units in Lexus Manila since they are certified for your peace of mind.

Being Japanese, it has some advantages when it comes to maintenance costs but having one under your garage is similar to the top of the line Camry. While there are parts shared with some Toyota models, insist on original Lexus pieces. They may be expensive, but totally worth it especially the dealership visits will give you excellent service.

Exterior and Interior
Sharp edges with some arrow lines are the main attraction, but you might not know that the wheelbase is wide thanks to the wheels pushed to the sides. Quality wise, it has all the gaps enclosed and the paint finish is exemplary but you'll say to yourself that it is just an ordinary Japanese sedan. While it can stare heads, a German one will have more just like the Lexus is Enrique Magalona while a German is Daniel Padilla (sorry fangirls).

With this vehicle having a retail price of P2.9M when it was new, it must have a high quality interior. And in the case of the Lexus, it does the task well and the interior is geared towards the driver. Since this is a driver biased machine, fake timber is thrown out of the options list and standard is an all black dashboard with metallic trim. While quality is tops, the buttons and switch gears look and feel they are from Toyotas, which is not a good thing. Another bad comment about the interior is that the position of controls are all situated in the middle that are placed dangerously close to one another. Drivers have to make do with a low seating position that can hamper visibility and those with average built need to adjust their seat so that they can avoid hitting their heads. Rear passengers wouldn't enjoy their places due to the driver's seat being adjusted for their convenience.

Engine
Among the slew of engines introduced, the sole option for the Philippine market is the 3GR-FE 2,994cc V6 with 228hp at 6,200rpm and 300Nm at 4,400rpm. Since this is shared with the Camry, it has a strength when it comes to cruising but you can be wild by pushing the throttle though the progress is a build-up process with a quiet engine note.

Driving Impressions
While it has a stiff body, independent suspension on all sides, and powerful brakes, the IS isn't enjoyable to drive especially at speeds above 100km/h but for city duties, this is an able performer thanks to its light steering. It may be comfortable, but road imperfections can spoil the fun .

Verdict
The Lexus has everything that the Germans have for less, but in this case, the Germans succeed on making their cars enjoyable to drive backed up with luxury. The IS can be a great buy, but also check out similar competitors since you might love them more especially when it comes to performance and driving.

The Good:
  • Standard equipment
  • Sharp looks
  • High levels of quality
The Bad:
  • Interior space is not good
  • Driving dynamics not up to German levels
  • Unsettled ride
The Pick: IS300

Porsche 911 50 Years Edition, 2013

  •  Porsche 911 50 Years Edition, 2013

In 1963, Porsche presented the original model to the public. Since this first announcement - initially as the type 901 - the 911 has excited automotive fans across the globe. Porsche will unveil the limited edition model to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 911 at the IAA in Frankfurt, which opens its doors to the public on 12 September, 2013.

The Porsche is celebrating a special anniversary of the 911 sports car at the 2013 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt with a commemorative 50 Years Edition - half a century since the iconic coupé made its debut in the German city. Appropriately, the special model will be limited to 1,963 cars.

Like the first coupé, the Porsche 911 50 Years Edition combines a distinctive silhouette with a rear-mounted, flat-six engine and rear wheel drive. Yet its efficient performance, active sports suspension and exclusive body styling add contemporary appeal. Over seven successive generations, the Porsche 911 continues to resolve apparent contradictions - such as between tradition and innovation and performance and efficiency - andhas become renowned as the quintessential benchmark sports car.

The special anniversary 911 is based on the 911 Carrera S, but is clothed in the wider body - 44 mm broader across the rear wheel arches - that is typically reserved for the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models. The unique exterior styling is combined with features that have contributed to the 50-year success story of the car. For example, the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), with special tuning to complement the increased track width, adds to the exceptional cornering dynamics. The car also features a sports exhaust system for increased emotional character.

Powered by a 400 hp 3.8-litre flat-six engine, the 911 50 Years Edition sprints from 0-62 mph [0-100 km/h] in 4.5 seconds (4.3 secs with PDK) and can reach a top speed of 186 mph [300 km/h] (185 mph [298 km/h] with PDK). The NEDC Combined fuel consumption is 29.7 mpg [9.5 l/100km] (32.5 mpg [8.7 l/100km] with PDK), which equates to CO2 emissions of 224 g/km (205 g/km with PDK).

Giving a clear indication to the rear-mounted location of the flat-six power plant are bespoke chrome strips on the fins of the engine compartment grille. These are complemented with special trims on the front air inlets, and in a strip across the car between the rear lights. A further contemporary interpretation of 911 leitmotifs are the unique five-spoke cast alloy wheels whose style has been inspired by the so-called 'Fuchs' wheels, a legendary rim that was in fact a Porsche design and first fitted to the 911 in 1966. The new 20-inch diameter wheels are finished in matt black paint with machine-polished centres.

Two unique colours are available for this anniversary 911; a darker Graphite Grey and a lighter Geyser Grey metallic. Black is also available. Each of the cars has a '911 50' badge finished in two-tone 3D-style on the rear lid, which is repeated in three-colour embroidery on the head restraints and as a two-colour logo on the rev counter and the aluminium door sill plates. It is also displayed on the passenger side fascia strip together with the limited edition number of the individual vehicle.

Other exterior characteristics of the special model are high-gloss window frames and SportDesign exterior mirrors. A technical highlight is the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), which adds a dynamic cornering function to the already standard-fit Bi-Xenon headlights.

The inside, there are further styling touches reminiscent of the original 911 such as green labelling on the instruments with white pointer needles and silver caps on the instrument pivot pins. Another special feature are the centre panels of the leather seats, which are designed with a fabric pattern that evokes the 'Pepita' tartan design from the 1960s. The leather interior can be specified in Agate Grey or Black with decorative stitching. Sports seats with 14-way adjustment are standard, with 18-way Sport Seats Plus available as an option. The gear shift or selector lever - which, like the decorative panels on the dashboard, doors and centre console, is trimmed in brushed aluminium - comes from the Porsche Exclusive custom tailoring programme.

In the UK and Ireland the Porsche 911 50 Years Edition is priced from £92,257, in Germany at 121,119 EUR, and in the US at $124,100, not including a $950 destination charge.

Peugeot 2008, 2014

  •  Peugeot 2008, 2014

Peugeot innovates by designing the first urban crossover that is easy, exciting and brings an enhanced driving experience:
  •     An innovative cockpit, structured around the small steering wheel, combining high-quality instrumentation and touch screen - as is the strategy for the brands products,
  •     A dynamic behaviour synonymous with enjoyment, with Peugeot's ride and handling expertise,
  •     Freedom to go on mixed terrain due to raised ground clearance, protection and Grip Control.

An international concept
On all continents, the world is changing, becoming more urbanised. The new generation of people love the city as much as they like to escape from it. Dynamic, flexible, they move constantly from one configuration to another life. Regardless of their continent, they are looking for products to enhance their image and enchant their lives.

With the mind, the brand has developed a specification of ambitious targets. The crossover by Peugeot combines a unique driving experience, with strong design and benefits of use. The challenge was to integrate this DNA design across three geographic areas for a vehicle for a global clientele. The Peugeot 2008 sold in Europe is produced in the factory in Mulhouse (France).

With the 2008, Peugeot capitalises on its expertise acquired with the success of the 3008 Crossover to create an innovative vehicle for the B segment. Set to go on sale in spring 2013, it joins in the dynamic of the offensive successfully initiated by the 208.

At just 4.16m long and 1.74m wide, Peugeot 2008 innovates by combining uniquely exciting driving, the robustness of an SUV with the practicality of space, comfort and modularity so to enjoy each moment. Equally at home in town and on the road, it can escape the restrictions of a city with confidence and ease due to its enhanced traction of Grip Control.

A unique style for a new territory
The Peugeot 2008 reinvents the standards of large volume vehicles in the small car segment. Innovative from first glance, it successfully merges the worlds. The strong stylistic trend affirms its identity contributing to practicality, volume and driving experience.

With its raised posture, the 2008 runs on 'Mud&Snow' tyres and 17'' alloy wheels in a matt finish. The special shape of the wheel arch surrounds give the Peugeot 2008 a good stance of clear capability. The black bumpers and body sills protect it, together with stainless steel front and rear off-road protection panels with chromed side mouldings.

The front face adopts the stylistic codes of the Marque. The components are adjusted precisely, all surplus material removed. Finely sculpted, the bonnet demonstrates the protection, strength and lightness of the 2008. The floating grille is cut from a block and is set upright with an expression which is both refined and full of power. The innovative headlamps are designed precisely to the technical functions. Sharp, they act with the bodywork to outline a cat's pupil. Sculpted, they are one with the front face, giving it an even more expressive, technological and individual character. This look is emphasised by LED day running lamps. The bonnet and wings complete this reassuring impression of precision, protection and strength, yet still lightweight.

The new urban crossover has very elegant and sophisticated sculpted wings and sides, indicating clear athletic qualities. The generous glazed surfaces, including the panoramic roof, promise a spacious interior open to its surroundings. The rear elegantly combines strength with dynamism. The boot volume, with a low loading sill, has above it a roof with dynamic curves, inspired by the RCZ. The wide tailgate is framed by lamps secured solidly to the bodywork. Floating inside their housing, the three luminous claws lit at their base by LEDs appear suspended.

The dynamic and elegant movement of the roof is also a feature of the profile. A roof wave emerges above the rear seats and sets the scene for an exclusive decoration as if cut into the metal. As if crimped to the bodywork, it is the origin of the spoiler in an extension of the same part, on the surface. The precise design of the roof bars puts the finishing touches to the concepts of dynamism and leisure expressed by the Peugeot 2008.

An innovative driving experience in the crossover segment
From first glance, the interior of the Peugeot 2008 takes its driver on a journey along new roads. Grip Control dial and aircraft type handbrake arranged on an exclusive console, new Brundy trim with an earthy tone … the driver is transported in an elegant ambiance with striking colour schemes. A true invitation to touch, the fascia capping is covered in a silky material. Satin chrome parts brighten this space: vents, handbrake lever, small steering wheel lower decoration, gear lever knob ears, touch screen trims.

On the higher levels, two versions of the console are available. The first offers paint of very intense depth, combining mat and metallic flecks. The second has a network of graduated fine lines. This design is obtained by means of a very precise laser engraving process. The fascia trim, the front and rear door crossbars are also adorned with this design.

As on the outside, the light signature is a constituent part of the passenger compartment of the 2008. So the atmosphere on board is like no other. Ideally placed in the line of vision, the head up dials on the higher versions are surrounded with blue LED backlighting whereas they are chromed on the other versions.

The panoramic glass roof, fitted with its electric shutter, allows natural light into the passenger compartment. When the lights are switched on, the LED guides emit a dimmed blue light. However, even with the steel roof, the Peugeot 2008 offers a unique light signature. In fact, it innovates with a roof adorned with motifs of a very precise design obtained by laser engraving. At night, the Peugeot LED Track is lit with a soft white light emitted by LEDs.

With the international success of the 3008, Peugeot acquired extensive expertise in the crossover which it has decided to combine with its driving experience expertise. The 2008 benefits from benchmark handling in the segment being the first crossover with the driving characteristics of a hatchback. Anticipating the road thanks to his high position, the driver controls the vehicle by means of a small steering wheel. As the reactive steering provides consistent information about the road, he places the Peugeot 2008 with precision and agility.

The suspension and wheels have been adjusted precisely to take advantage of the limited weight of 1045kg. The fine-tuning related to the pseudo-McPherson front axle and the rear suspension with deformable crossmember with springs and dampers which have been specially calibrated, as has the power steering. So, the 2008 achieves an excellent combination of comfort, stability and dynamism. The driver can therefore take pleasure in reactive driving while guaranteeing the comfort of his passengers.

Grip Control for improved traction
The system patented by the Group optimises traction in conditions of poor grip. It combines with the 16cm ground clearance an advanced traction control system and 'Mud&Snow'; tyres, fitted on wheel rims of distinctive style combining a diamond cut finish and a matt finish.

Versatile and flexible, Grip Control adapts to the terrain encountered by acting on the front wheels with the driver always in control. Indeed, they can decide at any time to select from Standard mode using the dial located on the centre console, for: Snow, Off-Road, Sand, ESP Off conditions.

On the 2008, Grip Control is available with two sizes of tyres: 215/60 R16 or 205/50 R17.

Park Assist, making parking a pleasure
By automating parking manoeuvres, this technological equipment exploits the compactness of the Peugeot 2008 to make moving around town easier. After activating the function, the driver selects the manoeuvre to be carried out on the touch screen, parallel parking on the left or right-hand side of the road. Then the ultrasound measures the spaces to indicate to the driver the first space available. The Park Assist then parks the vehicle by action of the electric power steering, the driver no longer having to do anything but check the progress of his vehicle and surrounding objects.

To leave the space, nothing could be easier. Simply call on the intelligence of the Park Assist once more, even on a hill thanks to the Hill Assist function, available on all engines with the exception of the 1.4-litre e-HDi 68 and the 1.2-litre VTi 82 5-speed manual.

Safety of the highest level: primary, secondary and tertiary
In a vehicle, safety begins with a comfortably seated driver, at one with his environment. The intuitive architecture of the 2008's instruments and controls has been developed to achieve this objective. The small steering wheel is the symbol of this; it illustrates the ease of taking control of the 2008 and the driving precision. The head up instrument panel reduces the time needed to obtain information. The large 7" touch screen, at the driver's fingertips, minimises commands for control of the audio/navigation. The driver can also count on the cruise control-speed limiter which is standard on all versions, on the chassis adjustments and on a range of other equipment. The Peugeot 2008 creates an alliance never experienced until now, combining safety, reactive driving and ease.

All versions of the 2008 are fitted as standard with an ESP, disconnectable up to 50km/h / 30mph, which combines several functions: anti-skid regulation (ASR), stability control (CDS), emergency braking assistance (EBA) and electronic brake force distribution (EBFD). The whole acts on four brake discs regardless of the version chosen. However, they are adapted to the different engines for improved characteristics (performance and durability). So, at the front, the ventilated discs are of two different sizes: 266 x 22mm and 283 x 26mm for the most powerful versions. At the rear, the range is equipped with non-ventilated discs of 249 x 9mm.

The structure of the Peugeot 2008 is designed for optimum deformation in the event of an impact. In this case it diffuses the energy in the force channels which guarantee the integrity of the passenger compartment. The occupants are protected by a set of six airbags - two front, two side, two curtain. The side air bags are installed in the front seat backs. So, the front occupants are provided with optimum protection, regardless of the adjustment of the seats. For the safety of children, the passenger's front airbag can be disconnected to permit the installation of a "rear facing" child seat while the rear side seats are equipped with Isofix mountings with three fixing points.

The active footrest and the collapsible steering column contribute to the protection of the driver, while the connection between the front doors and the centre pillar is guaranteed by a retention pin.

The 2008 also benefits from Peugeot's leadership in terms of tertiary safety. When equipped with the Independent Telematic Unit, the urban crossover offers the Peugeot Connect SOS and Peugeot Connect Assistance services free of charge and with no time limit. In the event of an incident, the vehicle is geolocated and the assistance process triggered.

Since its launch in 2003, more than 760,000 Peugeot vehicles in 10 European countries have been equipped with these services. They have permitted rapid attendance of the emergency services in more than 6,500 serious situations.

A large volume, easy to use
With its wheelbase of 2.54m, the Peugeot 2008 offers interior characteristics of a high level. The rear passengers have a generous amount of space, thanks to the thinner front seat backs, and a 12v socket for the connection of a portable device. Without leaving their seat, they can access the boot even when the vehicle is moving. To permit this, the front part of the load space cover pivots.

From the outside, access to the large boot is just as easy with a large rectangular opening and a low loading sill, just 60cm high, trimmed with a brushed stainless steel protector. The 1/3-2/3 modular bench seat allows you to change the volume from 360 to 1194dm3, of which 22dm3 are under the floor, with a single gesture. One press on the control at the top of the rear seat back is all it takes to fold the seat back, the seat cushion retracts automatically.

To make handling objects easier, the floor has five rails which run from the sill to the front seats. Six chromed hooks allow them to be secured safely. Practical down to the smallest detail, the boot offers two storage areas on the sides, with a retaining strap and a storage net, and an additional space of 22-litres under the boot mat.

Wherever they are sitting, passengers find numerous storage compartments, well designed and easy to locate thanks to the front and rear courtesy lamps: front door trays, glove box, tray and can holder near the gear lever, console closed storage compartment, pockets on the front seat backs. In total, the storage volume is 24-litres. So, keys, smartphones and other everyday objects always find a place in the 2008.

An efficient range of engines
Taking advantage of the light-weight design, aerodynamic silhouette and the wide range of engines makes it possible to have low fuel consumption and low emissions from just 3.8 l/100km / 61.8mpg and CO2 from 98g/km.

The expertise and technological innovation of the Group - introduction of the Stop&Start on the petrol engines, Diesel e-HDi engines, new generation 3-cylinder petrol engines - position the Peugeot 2008 as the leader in its segment by successfully combining protection of the environment and driving pleasure.

New generation 3-cylinder petrol engines
Designed entirely by the Group, the new generation of 3-cylinder petrol engines has already proved its efficiency in terms of consumption and emissions of CO2. But it is also compact and light with, for the 1.2 VTi, a reduction of 21kg compared to a 4-cylinder engine of equivalent power.

A complete Stop&Start range: e-VTi petrol and e-HDi Diesel
This technology was introduced successfully by the e-HDi engines on the 508 and 308 before being popularised by the 208. Today, the e-VTi engines launched by the 2008 allow customers choosing petrol to enjoy the same benefits.

Fitted on both the petrol and Diesel engines, this technology, which reduces consumption and increases the comfort of use, is now available on 6 of the 9 engines of the Peugeot 2008 range. The 1.2 e-VTi is coupled with a development of the automated gearbox which offers a creep-drive function and reduces CO2 emissions to only 99g/km. For Diesel, the range starts at 98g/km.

New Turbocharged 3-cylinder engines
In the months following its launch, the engine range will be expanded versions of the supercharged three-cylinder gasoline engine. Two power levels are available; 1.2-litre e-THP 110 and 1.2-litre e- THP 130 offer smooth driving characteristics, due mostly to its high torque, respectively of 205 and 230Nm.

With a high degree of technical sophistication, the 1.2-litre e-THP is 12kg lighter, compared to a 4- cylinder naturally aspirated equivalent engine, even though it has a turbo, a larger cooling system and that it offers performance with 45% more torque. The fuel consumption improvement is between 15 and 20%, depending on the version.

Car Choices:
The plain variant called the sedan, available between 2008 to 2010, is best avoided since the 102hp struggles at acceleration. Later models, known as the Aero, are better buys since horsepower ratings were upped at 110hp.

Initial models have at least 15 inch alloys power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, electric power steering, ABS brakes, airbags, body kits, folding rear seat, CD player, fabric seats, alarm, and keyless entry. Aero variants gain 17 inch wheels and rear spoiler.

Opel Adam Rocks Concept, 2013

  •  Opel Adam Rocks Concept, 2013

Showcasing how Adam's unique personalization program can get another twist, the Rocks Concept has been created for those seeking personal freedom 'off the beaten track' beyond the urban landscape. Inspired by Parkour urban athletes, it is higher and wider on its wheels, tougher and more compact in appearance. The Adam Rocks' special feeling of personal freedom is further emphasized by its cabrio looks and fabric roof that offers a free view of the sky above. The fabric extends across the entire width and length of the roof, right back to the C-pillars.

Offering 61,000 exterior variations and nearly 82,000 for the interior, as well as a state-of-the-art IntelliLink infotainment system, the lifestyle Opel Adam is the true champion of individualization - and the best connected small car around. But that is not enough for Opel. At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Opel shows that it explores ways of further enhancing Adam's individualization and reveals an urban mini-crossover study called Adam Rocks. With its new 3-door body style, its 3.70 meters in length, muscular proportions, fierce design and open-air capability, Opel Adam Rocks also is a proposal for opening a new segment of the market.

Parkour fun on four wheels
The Rocks Concept embodies the characteristic strengths of current Adam models: just like them, it is an athletic small, urban lifestyle car with exciting design, unrivalled personalization and connectivity possibilities, and the best of German engineering. Its mature new crossover body style is supported by a chassis that is raised by 15 mm with a 40 mm wider stance. Agile "Parkour" athletes, who give city spaces another twist and dimension, were the inspiration for the Adam Rocks sporty urban crossover concept. Its look is emphasized by impressive 'elbow and knee pads': protective cladding around the side sills, as well as a centrally-located exhaust tailpipe in OPC style. The Opel Adam Rocks' assertive looks - with a prominent grille structure and LED headlamps - show this car means business. The boomerang shaped turn indicators, enclosing the fog lamps highlight this effect and, when off, they shimmer in opaque glass. This makes the Adam Rocks' styling even more individual - just like the additional blinkers in the front side sills.

The car rides on large 18-inch wheels in Twister design featuring visible Brembo disc brakes. These wheels, which are fitted with innovative exchangeable wheel clips, are already available in Adam's production program. But the Rocks Concept's clips get a new, bolder, even more expressive design and a selection of new colors makes them stand out in contrast to the body's various grey tones. Neon-blue stripes highlight the tire tread. This color motif is echoed in the interior and around the roof.

Clear view of the sky
The high-quality level of individualization is also reflected in the Adam Rocks' interior. Elegant Nappa leather upholstery in a Brandy-colored tone from the Cascada gives the Adam concept cabin the premium feel of Opel's new mid-size convertible - all within just 3.70 meters length. In typical Adam style, the neon-blue piping contrasts superbly with the warm, light-brown leather. The piping is also used on the leather steering wheel and the gear shift lever. Additional splashes of color on the instrument panel, center console and door panel molding of the Rocks Concept add a dashing touch - exactly that unmistakable design flair which distinguishes each and every Adam.

The major benefit of this layout is that passengers can enjoy open-air driving fun without losing trunk space. The electric roof folds back via remote control in front of the C-pillars and does not protrude into the tailgate, leaving unrestricted access to the trunk's full capacity. The additional weight caused by this system is minimal compared to a traditional, pure cabrio concept - a major criteria for a car of that size. The 'networked' roof's special appeal is its intelligence: a special weather app, displayed on the color driver-information-center of the IntelliLink infotainment system, knows when a weather front is imminent and automatically initiates closing of the roof. Clever if, on a hot summer day, you leave your car open in front of your house and a storm arrives.
